Celebration of "Martisor" and Eugen Doga's 70 years anniversary in Washington DC.

On March 03, 2007 at the Cultural Center Goethe in Washington DC took place the celebration of “Martisor” and Eugen Doga's 70 years anniversary. The event was organized by the Embassy of Moldova and the Moldovan community from the East of USA. The goal of this cultural event was to promote the beautiful Moldovan tradition of spring coming, celebrate the birth of Eugen Doga, as well as to strengthen the patriotic spirit and cultural connection between Moldovans and their home country.

The Ambassador of Moldova to the U.S., Nicolae Chirtoaca, addressed an opening greeting to the public and made a presentation of the recent achievements of our country and encouraged the guests to continue their contribution to the development of a positive image of Moldova in America. Along the greetings regarding “Martisor” and the anniversary of the musician Eugen Doga, the chief of mission has underlined the duty to commemorate the heroes who died fighting for the territorial integrity and independence of the Republic of Moldova and who with the price of their lives have contribute to the creation of Moldova as a state. Moreover, the Ambassador addressed a message of gratefulness to the American public for their contribution to the development of Moldovan-American relations in various areas.

The cultural program began with the reciting of “the legend of Martisor”. After, the public assisted to a fashion show of Moldovan designer Valentina Vidrascu who was invited by the diplomatic mission to participate at the event. The designs were presented by volunteers from Moldovan community and were inspired from the national costume. The culinary traditions of our country were “tasted” during a contest organized to determine the best home made “placinte”. The participants at the contest have been rewarded with different prizes offered by the sponsors of the event. At the same time, the public had the chance to taste genuine Moldovan wines.

A part of the event was dedicated to the 70 years anniversary of the birth of composer Eugen Doga. The embassy’s representatives have mentioned the contribution of Eugen Doga to the development of the cultural patrimony of our country, and the talents from Moldovan community have performed songs composed by the great musician.

The hosts of the event have also organized the picture contest “Memories of Moldova”. The photographic pieces were place in the room were the event took place and the winning pictures will be placed at the office of the Embassy of Moldova. At the end of the event the musical group “Café Concert” has performed national Moldovan folk songs.

The event has gathered around 200 Moldovan and foreign citizens from the District of Columbia, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware and New York as well as friends of Moldova from the United States. This cultural action was supported by the Moldovan representatives of the local business (The Moldova Foundation, Dittberner Associates Inc, Graystone Wine Imports, Red Square Club and Spa, Moldova House, Sergey Potorac Immigration Law Offices, BIPmoldova). Each participant has received a Martisor, a symbolic gift and a DVD with the movie “Moldova – a new tourist destination”.
