The cultural map of Europe has been visibly modified as a result of the world order change after 1992, and other geopolitical factors. This resulted in placing it into environment of
perception of new identity, directly influencing states and remote communities through cultural diversity, involving
them into a global process of modernization and accelerated transformation.
Moldova as well became an arena with noticeable evolution of the mass communication, what determined radical mutations
of the identity values, thus provoking a virtual invasion of the pseudo-values in the cultural-artistic area. Research
and exploring new forms of the artistic expression in visual arts, music, theater, dance, literature, have been
intensified through democratization of the access to information.
“Liberal euphoria” in the cultural context of the Republic of Moldova brought to light a series of problems of the
older generation adaptation to the new, unlimited geographically cultural space and in the same time offered enormous
possibilities to the new generation of artists in launching themselves and flexibility in promoting their image
outside of the South East European context.
A more careful analysis of the actual cultural space in the republic of Moldova would distinguish unclear boundaries
between the elitist culture, produced in the academics-intellectual field and the popular culture, produced by
amateurs and aimed at diverse audiences without conceptual preferences. In contrast with these two forms, culture
for masses, promoted through the mass media has a more ample influence, its own market and has more or less stable
audience of non-homogenous consumers, as compared to the limited audience of the “Great Culture”, as it is defined
by Alvin Toffler, particularly that of music, art, theater, literature.
A considerable impact on the artistic processes of the last decade in the Republic of Moldova has been provided by
the Soros Foundation, namely through logistical and financial support of diverse cultural programs and projects:
seminars, international conferences, creation camps, workshops, round tables, publications, donations, offering
various grants and scholarships for excellence both for the professionals and for youth in the process of formation.
At the levels of organization, strategy and promotion of arts in the republic of Moldova, Soros Foundation facilitated
cultural connections between Moldova and the rest of the world, thus achieving an open society model, having culture
as its language.
The appearance of publications such as “Art-Hoc” (Center of the Contemporary Art), “Atelier” (Union of the Plastics
Artists), “Arta” (Academy of Science) added a new socio-cultural dimension, but unfortunately, appearance of these
publications has sporadic character and is determined by the economic factors. Numerous public libraries and buildings
have been transformed into art galleries and exhibition halls with the same easiness, with which the Organ Hall,
Art Museum or Theater of Opera and Ballet offered their halls to restaurants, markets and commercial activities for
to face the economic necessities. In this respect, the appearance of galleries such as “Brincusi”, Gallery of the
French Alliance, “Galeria L”, “Holti” and others represents unique and outstanding examples of maintaining high level
of culture in the Republic of Moldova. During the period of transition these galleries tried by their own efforts to
promote new personalities, movements and ideas, informal and non-governmental organizations of young artists, such as
“Zece”, “Fantom”, ARS DOR, and others thus integrating into European movement of values.
Today, despite all problems this state is confronting with at the cross of millennia, Moldova contributes to the
movement of values through new names and highly qualified works and through its cultural-artistic heritage, which
is represented all over the world.
